What Does a Food Safety Officer Do? (In Simple Words)

What does an FSO actually do? A Food Safety Officer is the government’s on-ground representative for food safety, working under the rules of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). In simple terms, their job is to:

• Inspect food factories, restaurants, dairies, and food storage/processing units
• Check hygiene, sanitation, and quality-control practices at these places
• Collect food samples and send them for lab testing
• Make sure businesses follow food-labelling, packaging, and expiry-date rules
• Take action — issue notices, or even initiate legal proceedings — against businesses that sell unsafe or adulterated food

In short, an FSO is one of the main reasons the food you buy from a shop, restaurant, or dairy is checked for safety before it reaches you. It’s a meaningful, on-ground government role with real public-health responsibility, not a desk-only job.

Educational Qualification

• Option 2: A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree in specific Food Technology subjects (Food Engineering, Food Processing & Preservation, Food Technology & Management, Food Bio-Technology, Food Plant Operation Management, Food Process Engineering & Management, Food Preservation, Food Safety & Quality Management, Process & Food Engineering) OR Agricultural Science subjects (Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Bio-Technology, Dairy Technology, Fisheries, Food Technology, Food Nutrition & Dietetics, Horticulture)
• Option 3: MBBS, BDS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS, BAMS, or Bachelor of Sowa Rigpa Medicine and Surgery
• Option 4: Any other course/qualification notified from time to time by FSSAI, New Delhi (with Central Government approval), for appointment as Food Safety Officer

Reservation Rules — Important Points

• Reservation benefits are given only to candidates who are permanent residents (domicile) of Bihar. Candidates from outside Bihar are treated as Unreserved, whatever their actual category
• The 35% horizontal reservation for women and the horizontal reservation for benchmark disabled candidates are also available only to Bihar domicile candidates
• Grandchildren of Bihar freedom fighters get 2% horizontal reservation, with a certificate from the District Magistrate of their home district in the prescribed format
• Transgender candidates get the same reservation benefits as Backward Classes
• BC and EBC candidates must submit a non-creamy-layer certificate; EWS candidates must submit an income and asset certificate (valid for 1 year from its issue date)
• Candidates with 40% or more benchmark disability can request a scribe (writer) by selecting “Yes” in the online form
• Important: Once you register, your claimed reservation category cannot be changed later — so choose carefully and have your correct certificate ready before you start the form

Application Fee

The fee is the same for every category: ₹100 only, payable online through debit card, credit card, net banking, or UPI. Bank charges are extra, and paid on top by the candidate.

Salary — What an FSO Earns

The post of Food Safety Officer is placed in Pay Level 6 (old Grade Pay ₹4,200, Pay Band-2). Under the 7th CPC Pay Matrix, Level 6 starts at a basic pay of around ₹35,400 per month, plus Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, and other benefits admissible under Bihar Government rules. For general career context, Food Safety Officer posts in other Indian states have sometimes been placed as high as Pay Level 7 (basic around ₹44,900), so this is a genuinely respected, technical government-officer role across the country, not just in Bihar.

Selection Process — How You Get Picked

• Selection is based only on the written Computer Based Test — there is no interview and no marks for work experience
