NDA Selection Process & Marks — Full Picture
| Stage | Details | Marks |
| Paper I — Mathematics | 120 questions, 2.5 hours; +2.5 for each right answer, −0.83 for each wrong answer | 300 |
| Paper II — General Ability Test (GAT) | 150 questions, 2.5 hours; +4 for each right answer, −1.33 for each wrong answer | 600 |
| Written Exam Total | Completed on 13 September 2026 | 900 |
| SSB Interview | 5 days, held at a Services Selection Board centre | 900 |
| Grand Total | Final merit = Written + SSB | 1,800 |
Note: Candidates must also score the separate minimum qualifying marks in both the written exam and the SSB to be included in the final merit list. UPSC usually publishes marks and cut-offs only after the final result, so do not expect cut-off marks right now.
SSB Interview — What Happens in the 5 Days
- Stage I (Screening, Day 1): Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test, and Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PP&DT). Only candidates who clear this stage continue
- Stage II (Days 2 to 5): Psychological tests, Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, Personal Interview, and the final Conference
- The SSB checks Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) such as leadership, confidence, teamwork, quick decision-making, and mental strength
- Candidates recommended by the SSB then go for a medical examination before the final merit list is made
Simple SSB Preparation Tips
- Practise OIR-style reasoning questions and picture-based story writing, since these decide whether you pass Stage I
- Be natural and honest in the interview — your own answers about your life, family, studies, and goals should match what you wrote in your forms
- Work on your fitness and stamina, because GTO tasks are outdoor group activities
- Read daily news and know basics about the Armed Forces, so you can answer general questions confidently
- Improve your communication and group discussion skills, and learn to listen as well as speak
- Do not memorise “perfect” answers. SSB assessors look for real personality, not rehearsed lines
Documents to Keep Ready for SSB
- SSB call letter / email intimation (once received)
- Original certificate of age (Class 10 certificate or equivalent)
- Original 10+2 certificate and mark sheets (and proof of Physics & Maths, if you applied for Air Force/Navy)
- Valid photo ID proof, such as Aadhaar Card
- Printout of the UPSC admit card and the result PDF page showing your roll number
- Any other documents asked for in your SSB call letter
Note: Always follow the exact document list in your own SSB call letter, since it can change slightly by centre.
Training & Career After Selection
- Selected cadets get free training and a stipend during their time at the academy
- NDA cadets generally complete 3 years of training at the National Defence Academy, followed by about 1 year of pre-commission training at their service academy (Army, Navy, or Air Force)
- After training, cadets are commissioned as officers — Lieutenant in the Army, Sub Lieutenant in the Navy, and Flying Officer in the Air Force
- A newly commissioned Army Lieutenant starts at Pay Level 10 of the 7th CPC (₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500), plus military service pay and allowances
Note: Training length and stipend details depend on the course and can change. The notification gives the pay scale only as “as per rule”, so confirm the latest details on the official sites.
Important Instructions for Candidates
- Use only upsc.gov.in and joinindianarmy.nic.in for official information
- Qualifying the written exam does not guarantee final selection
- Recruitment into the Armed Forces is free of cost. Never pay money to anyone who promises you selection or a “recommendation”
- Keep your registered email ID and mobile number active, because all SSB communication is sent there
