What Is HMWSSB, and What Does a Manager Do There?

The Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC) has released a notice for 130 Manager (Engineering) posts in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).

What is HMWSSB? It is the government body that supplies drinking water and manages sewerage (waste water) systems for the whole Hyderabad metropolitan area — including Greater Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and the surrounding fast-growing suburbs. It runs major projects like water pipelines from the Krishna and Godavari rivers, big city reservoirs, and sewage treatment plants. This board was set up way back in 1989 and remains one of the largest urban water utilities in India.

A Manager (Engineering) at HMWSSB is a technical, on-ground leadership role — planning, building, and maintaining Hyderabad’s water and sewerage infrastructure. Since Civil Engineering-related work (pipelines, treatment plants, water networks) is the core of HMWSSB’s job, it’s no surprise that 80% of these 130 posts are reserved for Civil Engineering graduates specifically.

Important Dates

  • Notification Date: 18 September 2026
  • Online Application Start Date: 23 September 2026
  • Last Date to Apply Online: 17 October 2026, 5:00 PM

Vacancy Details — Category Wise

Category Unreserved | Local | Total
OC 3 | 37 | 40
EWS 0 | 13 | 13
BC-A 1 | 9 | 10
BC-B 0 | 12 | 12
BC-C 0 | 2 | 2
BC-D 0 | 8 | 8
BC-E 0 | 5 | 5
SC Group I 0 | 2 | 2
SC Group II 1 | 11 | 12
SC Group III 0 | 6 | 6
ST 0 | 13 | 13
Visually Handicapped 1 | 1 | 2
Hearing Handicapped 0 | 1 | 1
Orthopaedically Handicapped 0 | 1 | 1
Multiple Handicapped 0 | 1 | 1
Sports 0 | 2 | 2
Total 6 | 124 | 130
Simple Note: Out of 130 posts, 124 are “Local” quota seats and only 6 are truly “Unreserved” (open, non-local). This is because 95% of these posts follow local reservation rules for Multi Zone II. These numbers are provisional and can change based on HMWSSB’s requirement.

Educational Qualification — Branch Wise

You need an engineering degree, with your result officially declared by the university on or before 18 September 2026.

Engineering Branch Share of Posts
Civil Engineering 80%
Electrical or Mechanical Engineering 15%
Computer Science / IT / Electronics & Communication Engineering 5%
Simple tip: If you’re a Civil Engineering graduate, you have by far the biggest share of seats here (about 104 out of 130). Non-Civil engineers (Electrical, Mechanical, CSE, IT, ECE) are competing for a much smaller pool of seats (about 26), so the competition ratio will likely feel different depending on your branch.

Age Limit (As on 1 July 2026)

Minimum Age 18 years
Maximum Age 44 years
You must NOT be born after 1 July 2008
You must NOT be born before 2 July 1982

Age Relaxation

Category Relaxation
SC, ST, BC and EWS 5 years
Persons with Disabilities 10 years
Telangana State Govt. Employees Up to 5 years, based on regular service length
Ex-Servicemen 3 years plus their Armed Forces service length
NCC Instructors 3 years plus their NCC service length
Note: Employees of corporations and municipalities do NOT get the age relaxation meant for regular Telangana State Government employees.

Salary and Local Reservation

Selected Managers will get a pay scale of ₹54,220 to ₹1,33,630, plus other allowances usually given to Telangana Government posts of this level.

This post is limited to Multi Zone II, and local reservation applies to 95% of the notified posts. Candidates from other states can still apply, but they will not get Telangana’s local reservation benefits — they will only be able to compete for the unreserved seats.

Application Fee

Category Application Fee | Exam Fee (Where Applicable)
OC and BC ₹1,000 | ₹120
SC, ST and PwD ₹500 | ₹120
  • All unemployed applicants are exempted from paying the ₹120 exam fee
  • Employees of the Central Government, State Government, PSUs, corporations, and other government-sector bodies must pay the exam fee
  • The application processing fee is compulsory for everyone, according to their category
  • Pay online only — through Net Banking, debit card, credit card, or UPI
  • Fees once paid are not refunded or adjusted

Selection Process — How You Get Picked

There is no interview for this post. Selection is decided purely by an objective written examination, conducted in CBRT (Computer-Based Recruitment Test) or OMR mode, combined with reservation rules.

Minimum Qualifying Marks

Category Minimum Marks
OC, EWS and Sportspersons 40%
BC 35%
SC, ST and Persons with Disabilities 30%
Important: Getting these minimum marks does not automatically give you the job. Final selection depends on your rank, the branch-wise vacancies, and your eligibility being confirmed later.

Exam Pattern — Simple Breakdown

Paper Questions | Duration | Marks
Paper I: General Studies and General Abilities 150 | 150 min | 150
Paper II: Your Engineering Subject 150 | 150 min | 300
Total 300 | 300 min (5 hours) | 450
Simple tip: Notice that Paper II (your Engineering subject) is worth double the marks of Paper I (General Studies) — 300 versus 150. Since it decides most of your total score, your engineering-subject revision should get the bulk of your preparation time.

Language of the Exam

Paper I (General Studies) English and Telugu
Paper II (Engineering Subject) English only

Engineering Subjects Covered in Paper II

Paper II is set at degree level for your own branch. Separate subject syllabi exist for:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Computer Science and Information Technology
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering

Examination Centres

  • Hyderabad (including HMDA jurisdiction)
  • Nalgonda
  • Sangareddy
  • Mahaboobnagar

Important: TGPSC can change your centre, or add/remove centres, for administrative reasons. Requests for a change of centre from candidates will not be accepted.

How to Apply Online

  • Visit the official website: tgpsc.gov.in
  • Complete One Time Registration (OTR) if you don’t already have a TGPSC ID
  • Open the online application link for Notification No. 04/OG/HM/2026
  • Log in using your TGPSC ID, date of birth, and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number
  • Verify your personal, education, category, and other details fetched from your OTR record
  • Select your preferred exam centre
  • Preview your application and check every detail carefully
  • Click “Save and Payment” and pay the fee online
  • Click “Confirm and Submit” to finish
  • Download the generated PDF application and keep the reference ID safe

Important Application Instructions

  • OTR registration alone is NOT an application — you must separately submit the actual online application for this notification
  • Only the details in your OTR record at the time of application submission will be used — changing your OTR later will not affect this recruitment
  • Incomplete or incorrect applications will be rejected
  • Applications sent offline or through any other mode will not be accepted
  • Download and keep your final PDF application safe
  • Keep checking tgpsc.gov.in regularly for updates

Simple Tips Before You Apply

  • Update your OTR profile before you start applying: since your application pulls details straight from your OTR record, fix any outdated or wrong information there first, rather than discovering an error mid-application
  • Civil Engineering candidates have a much bigger pool of seats (80%): if you’re from Civil, you’re competing within a larger vacancy pool; non-Civil candidates (Electrical, Mechanical, CSE, IT, ECE) share a smaller 20% — plan your expectations accordingly
  • Focus most of your study time on Paper II: it’s worth double the marks of Paper I, so strong subject knowledge in your own engineering branch will matter more to your final score than general studies alone
  • Confirm your local-area eligibility carefully: with 124 of 130 posts under local reservation for Multi Zone II, candidates from outside this zone or outside Telangana should understand they’ll only be competing for the 6 unreserved seats
  • Unemployed candidates should confirm their exemption from the ₹120 exam fee before paying — don’t pay it unnecessarily if you already qualify for the waiver
  • Don’t wait for the last day: the form closes at a specific time (5:00 PM on 17 October), not midnight — submit a day or two early to avoid last-minute technical issues
