What Is MECON? (In Simple Words)

MECON Limited (originally called Metallurgical & Engineering Consultants India Limited) is a Miniratna Central Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Steel. It started way back in 1959, as the Central Engineering and Designing Bureau of Hindustan Steel Limited — India’s first public sector steel company.

In simple words, MECON is one of India’s leading engineering and consultancy companies. It designs, builds, and helps run projects for the steel, mining, power, oil & gas, and infrastructure sectors — everything from concept to final commissioning, including full turnkey construction. Over more than six decades, MECON has worked on over 4,000 consultancy and construction projects in India and abroad, playing a central role in building India’s steel industry. It even recently signed a cooperation agreement with Tata Steel (January 2025) and was upgraded to Miniratna Category-I status in mid-2026, reflecting its growing scale and importance.

MECON has now opened 159 Full Time Fixed Tenure (FTFT) engineering posts under Advertisement No. 2026/Cont/04, to support its ongoing project work at steel plants, mines, and industrial sites across India — in disciplines like Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Mining, Safety, Quality, Planning, Environmental Engineering, and Contracts.

Important Dates

  • Online Application Start Date: 3 October 2026
  • Last Date to Apply Online: 17 October 2026
  • Cut-Off Date for Age, Qualification & Experience: 25 September 2026
  • Interview Date: To be announced on meconlimited.co.in

Important: Notice that the cut-off date (25 September 2026) is actually before the application window even opens. This means your age, qualification, and work experience are all checked as they stood on that earlier date, not on the day you apply or submit your form.

Vacancy Snapshot — 159 Posts Across 59 Codes

This recruitment is unusually spread out — 159 posts across 59 separate post codes, each with its own qualification, experience requirement, pay, and job location. Rather than list every single code (best checked in the official PDF), here are the largest and most notable ones:

Post Vacancies | Monthly Pay | Key Location(s)
Deputy Executive (Contracts) 18 | ₹54,990 | Bhilai, Rourkela, Nagarnar, Bacheli, Ranchi
Junior Engineer (Electrical) 14 | ₹42,800 / ₹45,050 | Bhilai, Bellary, Malanjkhand
Assistant Engineer (Civil & Structural) 10 | ₹45,050 | Burnpur, Bhilai, Rourkela, Bacheli, Mumbai and more
Deputy Engineer (Civil) 10 | ₹54,990 | Burnpur, Bhilai
Assistant Engineer (Mechanical) 6 | ₹45,050 | Ranchi
Deputy/Additional Engineer (Civil & Structural) 5 + 5 | ₹54,990 / ₹67,860 | Bokaro, Vizag
Simple Note: The remaining 52 post codes carry 1 to 4 vacancies each, spread across sites like Rampura Agucha Mines, Debari, Malanjkhand, Durgapur, Bangalore, Paradip, Donimalai, and Nagarnar. Each code’s exact qualification, years of experience, pay, and tenure differ — always check the official notification PDF for your own specific post code before applying, rather than relying only on a general summary.

Qualification and Experience — General Pattern

  • Junior Engineer: B.E./B.Tech + about 1 year of experience | around ₹42,800/month
  • Assistant Engineer: B.E./B.Tech (or equivalent) + about 2–3 years of experience | around ₹45,050/month
  • Deputy Engineer: B.E./B.Tech + about 5 years of experience | around ₹54,990/month
  • Additional Engineer: B.E./B.Tech + about 9–10 years of experience | around ₹67,860/month
  • Engineer (Safety, Senior): Diploma/non-engineering degree + Safety/HSE course + about 16 years of experience | around ₹78,390/month (the highest-paid post code in this notification)
  • Some posts (Safety, Environmental Engineering, Mineral Processing) also accept Diploma holders, B.Sc./M.Sc. graduates, or candidates with specific certificate courses, not only engineering-degree holders

Your qualification must be a regular, full-time degree/diploma from a UGC/AICTE-recognized institute. Certificate courses like safety diplomas can be part-time.

What Counts as “Work Experience”? — Read This Carefully

  • Counted: Full-time, regular-salaried work in the relevant field
  • Counted: MT/ET/GT (Management/Executive/Graduate Trainee) on-the-job training, but only if done at another PSU
  • Counted: Apprenticeship done under the Apprenticeship Act
  • NOT Counted: Freelance work, running your own business, internships, articleship, teaching, research, or academic project work
  • Mandatory: Experience certificates from every past employer are required — a simple self-declaration of your own experience is not accepted

Simple tip: If any part of your claimed experience was freelance, internship, or self-employed work, do not count it toward meeting the eligibility bar — MECON will not accept it, however relevant it genuinely was.

Age Limit (As on 25 September 2026)

The maximum age is 50 years for General and EWS candidates.

Category Age Relaxation
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 3 years
SC / ST 5 years
PwD (General/UR) 10 years
PwD (OBC-NCL) 13 years
PwD (SC/ST) 15 years
J&K Domicile (born 01.01.1980–31.12.1989) 5 years
Ex-Servicemen As per Government of India rules
Important: SC, ST, and OBC candidates applying against an Unreserved (UR) post get no age or fee relaxation for that application.

Salary and Other Benefits

The consolidated monthly pay ranges from ₹41,190 to ₹78,390, depending on the post. On top of this, selected candidates get:

  • Site Allowance: 7.5% of pay, at site/project locations
  • Metro Allowance: 2.5% of pay, at metro locations
  • HRA: 5% of pay, if company accommodation is not taken
  • Annual Increment: 3% of consolidated pay
  • Medical: Ispat Hospital facilities at Ranchi; a retainer doctor at other locations; mediclaim premium reimbursement up to ₹15,000 (₹4 lakh floater cover)
  • Leave: 12 days Casual Leave, 18 days Earned Leave (accumulates up to 45), 14 days Half Pay Leave, maternity leave as for regular staff, plus national, festival, and 4 restricted holidays
  • Group Personal Accident Policy: ₹25 lakh sum insured

The offer is given for 1 year at first, and renewed year by year, up to the post’s full contract period, based on your performance and the company’s requirement.

Application Fee

  • UR, OBC (NCL), EWS: ₹500 (non-refundable), paid online only
  • SC, ST, PwD, Ex-Servicemen, and internal MECON candidates: Exempt (no fee)

Important: After paying, you must click “Verify” so your application status changes to “Submitted” — simply paying the fee without this step does not complete your application.

Selection Process — Interview Only, No Written Exam

  • Selection is through a Personal Interview only — there is no written test in this cycle, though MECON may change this if needed
  • The interview list, date, and venue will be posted on the MECON website and emailed to shortlisted candidates
  • After the interview, selected candidates go through Document Verification and a Medical Examination
  • Travel Allowance: Outstation candidates get 3AC/CC rail fare, or ₹7 per km by road, whichever is less

How to Apply Online

  • Visit meconlimited.co.in and go to Careers → Career Opportunities → Apply Online
  • Find Advertisement No. 2026/Cont/04 and read the full notification carefully
  • Register with an active email ID and mobile number — these cannot be changed later
  • Fill in your personal, educational, and experience details carefully — no edits are allowed after submission
  • Upload a passport photo and signature (JPG/JPEG format, up to 40 KB each)
  • Merge all your self-attested documents into one PDF of up to 1 MB, which should not be password-protected, and upload it
  • Pay ₹500 (if applicable) and click “Verify”
  • Save a printout of your completed application to carry to the interview

Simple Tips Before You Apply

  • Find your exact post code in the official PDF first: with 59 separate post codes, don’t assume a general summary covers your specific requirement — check the exact qualification, experience, pay, location, and tenure for your own code
  • Gather experience certificates from every past employer now: since self-declarations are not accepted, and you may need certificates from more than one past job, start collecting these well before the 17 October deadline
  • Double-check what experience actually counts: if a chunk of your resume is freelance, internship, or self-employed work, don’t count on it meeting the years-of-experience bar — only full-time, salaried, relevant-field work (or PSU-based MT/ET/GT training, or Apprenticeship Act apprenticeship) is accepted
  • Prepare your documents as one clean PDF under 1 MB well in advance — merging multiple scanned certificates into a single compliant file can take longer than expected if left to the last day
  • Remember the cut-off date is 25 September 2026, not your application date — if your qualification or experience only became valid after that date, you may not meet the eligibility bar for this cycle
  • Since selection is interview-only, be ready to speak confidently about your actual project experience and technical knowledge in your specific discipline — this genuinely matters more here than in exams with a written-test stage
