What Is This Recruitment About? (In Simple Words)

The Society for Centralized Recruitment of Staff in Subordinate Courts (S.S.S.C.), acting on behalf of the District and Sessions Judges across Punjab, has released a notice (No. 37C/SSSC/PB/2026, dated 3 October 2026) to fill 1,270 Clerk posts in the District Courts of Punjab, under the High Court of Punjab and Haryana.

What does a Court Clerk actually do? A Clerk is the backbone of day-to-day paperwork inside a district court. The job generally involves maintaining and organising case files and court records, assisting judicial officers with clerical and administrative work, preparing and typing court orders and documents, handling correspondence, and keeping track of case schedules and listings. It’s steady, structured office work within the judiciary system — not a courtroom-arguing role, but one that keeps the entire court machinery running smoothly.

This is a genuinely large recruitment drive — 1,270 posts across Punjab’s district courts is one of the bigger clerical hiring rounds in the state judiciary this year, and S.S.S.C. has said this number can still go up or down depending on actual vacancies at the time the final merit list and postings are prepared.

Selection Process — Full Picture

  • Stage 1 — Written Examination (CBT): 100-mark objective and subjective test (full details below). This is the main merit-deciding stage
  • Stage 2 — Computer Proficiency Test (CPT): Mandatory, qualifying only — doesn’t add marks, but you must clear it
  • Stage 3 — Checking of Original Testimonials/Interaction: Candidates who clear both CBT and CPT are called to verify their original documents
  • Stage 4 — Final Merit List: Prepared strictly on your CBT (written exam) marks — CPT and document checking don’t add to your rank, only your written exam score decides your position

Tie-breaking rule: if two candidates have the same marks, the older candidate is ranked higher. If their date of birth is also the same, they are placed alphabetically (A to Z).

Written Exam (CBT) Pattern — 100 Marks

Subject Type | Questions/Detail | Marks
General Knowledge Objective | 50 Questions | 50
English Composition (Objective) Objective | 20 Questions | 20
English Composition (Written) Subjective | Essay (10) + Letter (5) + Precis (5) + Punjabi-to-English Translation (10) | 30
Total 100 Marks | 2 Hours
Qualifying marks: You must score at least 33% in each subject, AND at least 40% overall (aggregate) — meeting only one of these two conditions is not enough; you must clear both.

Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) — What It Involves

  • Only a limited number of candidates per category (decided by the High Court) are called for CPT, based on CBT merit
  • Part-I — Spreadsheet Test: 10 marks, 10 minutes, minimum qualifying 40% (4 marks or more)
  • Part-II — Typing Test: English typing at a speed of 30 words per minute
  • Part-II is checked only for candidates who score 4 or more in Part-I — if you don’t clear Part-I, your Part-II is simply not evaluated
  • CPT is mandatory and qualifying only — it does not count toward your final rank, but failing it ends your candidature regardless of your CBT score

Salary

Selected Clerks get a starting pay scale of ₹29,200 (Level-5), applicable to fresh recruitment/appointment made on or after 17 July 2020, as per the Punjab Government’s letter dated 12 September 2024. This is the basic pay figure; actual in-hand salary will include applicable allowances as per Punjab Government/judiciary service rules.

How to Apply Online

  • Visit the official website: sssc.gov.in
  • Click the link “Clerk District Courts of Punjab”
  • Fill the Registration form, followed by the full Application Form
  • Upload a recent passport-size photograph (not more than 1 month old, white background)
  • Upload a scanned signature
  • Capture and upload a real-time photograph through your webcam
  • Pay the application fee online through internet banking, debit card, credit card, or UPI
  • Submit the form and take a printout for your own record

Important: Your application is treated as “submitted” only after the fee is paid — registering alone is not enough. Incomplete applications are rejected outright, and your real-time photo, your uploaded photo, and your e-admit card photo must all clearly match each other.

Important Points to Remember

  • Applications are accepted online only — no other mode is entertained
  • You must have an active, personal email ID and mobile number
  • Final merit depends only on your CBT marks, even though CPT and document verification are also compulsory steps you must clear
  • Vacancy numbers can increase or decrease based on actual posts available when the merit list and postings are prepared
  • For technical help, contact +91 95948-04606 or 022-61087580, on working days between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM

Simple Tips Before You Apply

  • Confirm your Punjabi-at-Matric qualification first: since this is a specific, compulsory condition and not just “any 10th pass,” double-check your own 10th marksheet genuinely shows Punjabi as a subject before you pay the fee and apply
  • Remember the written exam decides everything: CPT and document checking are compulsory hurdles, but your actual rank comes only from CBT marks — put your main preparation energy into General Knowledge and English, since together they’re worth 70 of the 100 marks
  • Don’t ignore the subjective English section: essay, letter, precis, and Punjabi-to-English translation together carry 30 marks — practise these writing formats specifically, since they’re different from simple MCQ preparation
  • Start basic computer practice now, especially typing: the CPT needs 30 WPM typing speed and spreadsheet familiarity — these take real practice time to build, so don’t leave this until after you clear the written exam
  • Keep your photo consistency in mind from day one: use the same recent photo for your application upload and be ready to look the same at the real-time webcam capture and later at the exam centre, since mismatches can cause problems
  • Apply well before the 4 November deadline: with 1,270 vacancies likely drawing heavy interest, don’t wait for the final hours when the portal could get busy
