What Is a Descriptive Assessment? (Simple Explanation)

In a normal objective exam, you choose one answer from four options. In a descriptive assessment, you have to write your own answers in sentences or short paragraphs. The examiners check how well you know the subject of your post, how clearly you explain it, and how well you can apply it to real work situations.

For senior posts such as Scale IV, V and VI, this is a common way to test professional depth. It is also called Professional Knowledge (Descriptive Based) in the bank’s notice.

What We Know and What We Do Not Know About the Pattern

Known (From the Notice Summary) Not Given in the Sources We Checked
Online assessment on Professional Knowledge (Descriptive Based) Total marks and number of questions
Date: 31 October 2026 (tentative) Duration and shift timing
33 post codes covered Whether answers are typed or written, and the language
Centre and reporting time are on the call letter Negative marking, if any, and pass marks
Note: Please do not trust any marks or duration shared on social media. Open the notice PDF and your call letter for the real rules. We have not written any guess here.

For Comparison: The Objective Exam for Other Posts (As Reported)

Point Objective Exam, Posts up to Scale III
Test Professional Knowledge relevant to the post
Questions 50 multiple choice questions
Marks 100
Duration 60 minutes
Negative Marking One quarter of a mark for each wrong answer, as reported
Note: This table is only to show the difference. It is not the pattern of the 31 October descriptive assessment.

Union Bank Selection Process (As Reported)

  • The stages depend on the post and its scale. They can include an online exam, a group discussion or other assessment, and a personal interview
  • One report says candidates are called for the interview in a ratio of about 1:3 to the vacancies
  • Final selection is based on the combined marks of the stages that the bank holds for the post, in descending order, category-wise, up to the number of vacancies
  • Document verification and other checks follow as per the recruitment rules
  • Meeting the minimum qualification does not guarantee a call for the next stage
Note: These points are from job portals that summarised the 20 July 2026 notification. Please read the official notification for your own post code.

What to Check on Your Call Letter

The main page of the bank lists these items. If anything looks wrong, contact the bank early.

  • Your name, roll number and registration number
  • Exam date and reporting time
  • Exam centre name and full address
  • Your photograph
  • All exam-day instructions and the list of documents to carry

Your Last 7 Days Before the Assessment (Our Suggestion)

  • Today (24 October): Download the call letter, save the PDF and take printouts. Read the notice PDF fully
  • 25 October: Check the exam centre address and plan your travel. Book tickets if needed
  • 26 to 27 October: Revise the core topics of your own post (for example, taxation rules for the tax posts, or system design for architect posts). Make short notes
  • 28 October: Practise writing 5 or 6 answers of 100 to 150 words each on past topics of your field. Time yourself
  • 29 October: Revise real examples and recent changes in rules or technology in your area
  • 30 October: Light revision. Pack your documents. Sleep early
  • 31 October: Reach the centre early with your call letter and ID. Read each question twice before you write

Tips for Writing a Good Descriptive Answer (Our Suggestions)

  • Start with a one-line direct answer, then explain
  • Use short paragraphs or points. A clear structure is easy to read
  • Give a real example from banking or your field, if it fits
  • Use correct technical words of your subject, but keep your sentences simple
  • Manage your time. Do not spend too long on one answer
  • Read the on-screen instructions at the start. They explain how to answer and submit

What If You Face a Problem?

  • Login does not work: Check your registration or roll number and your password or date of birth
  • Page is slow: Try again later. Do not leave it to the last day
  • You cannot find your name or post code in the notice: Your assessment may be on another date. Check the recruitment page for other notices
  • A detail on the call letter is wrong: Contact the bank using the official contact details given on the recruitment pages
  • You are not sure about the pattern: Open the notice PDF and the instructions printed on the call letter

Beware of Fraud

  • Download the call letter only from the official recruitment link
  • Nobody can help you pass or get selected in exchange for money
  • Do not share your roll number, password or date of birth with unknown sites or callers
  • Do not pay anyone for a call letter. It is free

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Thinking that the 31 October date is for all posts of the recruitment
  • Not checking whether your post code is in the list of 33
  • Believing the pattern or marks posted on social media
  • Reaching the centre late or without the printed call letter and ID
  • Spending all your time on general topics and not on your own post’s professional knowledge
  • Ignoring the instructions on the call letter
