Category-wise Total Slots Overview

Category Qualification Total Slots
Category I Graduate in Engineering/Technology (B.E./B.Tech, First Class) 457
Category II Diploma in Engineering (Technician Apprentices) 438
Category III Graduate in General (Arts/Science/Commerce/Humanities) 623
Grand Total 1,518

Category I — Graduate Engineering Apprentices (Corporation-wise)

Corporation Mech./Auto Civil EEE CSE/IT Total
TNSTC Villupuram 40 10 20 30 100
TNSTC Kumbakonam 51 0 0 0 51

MTC Chennai 80 10 10 0 100
SETC Tamil Nadu 60 2 6 0 68
Total 360 26 41 30 457

Category II — Diploma Engineering Apprentices (Corporation-wise)

Corporation Mech./Auto Civil EEE CSE/IT Total
TNSTC Villupuram 10 4 11 15 40
TNSTC Kumbakonam 123 0 0 0 123

Total 338 20 30 53 438
MTC Chennai (138) and TNSTC Kumbakonam (123) alone hold nearly 60% of all Category II slots — Diploma holders targeting a strong shot at this drive should weigh these two corporations first.

Category III — Non-Engineering Graduate Apprentices (Corporation-wise)

Corporation Slots (BA/B.Sc./B.Com./BBA/BBM/BCA etc.)
TNSTC Villupuram 100
TNSTC Kumbakonam 251
TNSTC Madurai 37
TNSTC Tirunelveli 93
MTC Chennai 62
SETC Tamil Nadu 80
Total 623
TNSTC Salem does not appear in the Category III breakup at all — it offers no non-engineering graduate slots this cycle, unlike every other participating corporation.

Monthly Stipend Structure

Apprentice Type Monthly Stipend
Graduate Apprentices (Engineering & Non-Engineering) ₹12,300/-
Diploma in Engineering (Technician) Apprentices ₹10,900/-
Note this stipend is identical for Category I (Engineering) and Category III (Non-Engineering) Graduates — the pay difference in this scheme is driven purely by degree level (Graduate vs Diploma), not by subject stream.

Eligibility Criteria by Category

Category Minimum Qualification
Category I — Graduate Regular full-time Degree in Engineering/Technology with First Class from a Statutory University, Act-of-Parliament institution, or an equivalent recognised professional body
Category II — Technician (Diploma) Regular full-time Diploma in Engineering/Technology from a State Technical Education Board/Council, University, or recognised equivalent institution
Category III — Non-Engineering Graduate Regular full-time Degree in Arts/Science/Commerce/Humanities (BA/B.Sc./B.Com./BBA/BBM/BCA etc.) from a UGC-approved Statutory/Deemed University
Note: only Category I explicitly demands First Class as a stated eligibility floor — Categories II and III have no equivalent minimum-percentage clause mentioned, though marks still matter directly for shortlisting (see Selection Procedure below).

Who Cannot Apply — Ineligibility Conditions

  • Candidates who have already completed an apprenticeship under the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Act, 1973.
  • Candidates who are currently undergoing an apprenticeship anywhere under this Act.
  • Candidates with 1 year or more of work experience in the relevant field.
  • Candidates who did not pass their qualifying degree/diploma in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, or May 2026.
  • Candidates who do not hail from Tamil Nadu.

Reservation Policy

Reservation for SC / ST / OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) / PwD candidates follows the standard guidelines under the Apprentices Act. A valid Government-format category certificate is mandatory to claim reservation — BC/MBC candidates specifically need the approved OBC(NCL) certificate format. Failure to provide the correct certificate means the claim is automatically treated as “General” category, regardless of the candidate’s actual community.

Selection Procedure & Shortlisting Logic

Stage What Happens
1 Online application submitted via NATS portal with % of marks / CGPA×10 entered
2 BOAT (SR) shortlists candidates purely based on percentage of marks in the qualifying degree/diploma — no written exam or interview stage
3 Shortlisted candidates intimated via registered Email ID
4 Shortlisted candidates attend Certificate Verification at TNSTC Trichy Region office
If % of marks is not entered on the NATS portal, the application will not be considered at all — this single field is not optional despite how easy it is to overlook while uploading a provisional certificate/mark sheet.

How to Register & Apply — NATS Portal

Candidate Type Process
Category A — Old portal (mhrdnats.gov.in) users Visit nats.education.gov.in → Student → Student Login → Forgot Password → reset via registered email → complete application → get 12-digit Enrollment Number
Category B — Already enrolled on new portal Login with existing email & password directly → proceed to apply
Category C — First-time enrollment Visit nats.education.gov.in → Student → Student Register → complete form → get 12-digit Enrolment Number (ATN…)
Applying (all categories, once logged in):

  • Under “Apply against advertised vacancies,” search the exact corporation name (e.g., “TAMILNADU STATE TRANSPORT CORPORATION VILLUPURAM LTD,” “TNSTC KUMBAKONAM,” “METROPOLITAN TRANSPORT CORPORATION CHENNAI LTD,” etc.).
  • Click Apply — status will show as “applied.”
  • Upload the Provisional Certificate or Consolidated Mark Sheet (B.E./B.Tech/Diploma/BA/B.Sc./B.Com. etc.).
  • Compulsorily fill the “% of marks / CGPA×10” field — applications without this are not considered.

Why Category III (Non-Engineering) Has the Most Slots

  • At 623 slots, Category III is larger than Category I (457) and Category II (438) individually — a transport corporation’s back-office, ticketing, accounts and administrative functions genuinely need more general-stream manpower than its technical maintenance functions need engineers.
  • TNSTC Kumbakonam alone accounts for 251 of the 623 Category III slots (~40%) — disproportionately higher than its share of Category I or II, suggesting this region’s administrative apprenticeship intake is unusually large relative to its technical intake.
  • Despite the larger headcount, the stipend for Category III matches Category I (₹12,300) rather than sitting lower — so this isn’t a “lower-value” track, just a numerically larger one.
  • Candidates without an engineering background should see this as the segment with genuinely the best numerical odds across the entire 1,518-slot drive, purely on volume.

Certificate Verification Process

  • Venue: TNSTC Trichy Region office — a single centralised location for all 7 corporations, not a region-wise verification.
  • Timing: Fourth week of September 2026 (tentative).
  • No TA/DA is paid for attending verification, and no boarding/lodging expenses are admissible — candidates must budget their own travel and stay.
  • The shortlisted candidate list is published on nats.education.gov.in → Home page bottom → Regional Events → BOAT (Southern Region) → Apprenticeship News.

Important Instructions & Rules

  • The number of vacant training slots can be increased or decreased by the corporations regardless of what is mentioned in the notification.
  • Completion of apprenticeship creates NO obligation on the corporations to offer employment, and apprentices cannot claim any employment right on this basis.
  • Incomplete or erroneous applications received after the due date will be rejected outright, with no further communication.
  • BOAT (SR) has not authorised any individual or agency to coordinate or liaise on its behalf — candidates should be alert to touts.
  • Any canvassing or pressuring through any source will lead to disqualification and removal from official records without prior notice.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaving the “% of marks / CGPA×10” field blank on the NATS portal — this alone gets an otherwise-valid application excluded from consideration.
  • Applying despite already holding 1+ year of work experience or a prior/ongoing apprenticeship — such applications are simply ineligible under the notification’s own terms.
  • Claiming SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/PwD reservation without the correct Government-format certificate — the claim silently reverts to “General” rather than being flagged for correction.
  • Expecting an interview or written test — shortlisting here is purely marks-based; there is no additional selection round to prepare for.
  • Assuming apprenticeship completion guarantees a job offer — the notification explicitly rules this out.

Why This Apprenticeship Is Valuable for Fresh Graduates

Unlike regular recruitment drives that require competitive examinations, this apprenticeship focuses on practical training and industry exposure. During the one-year training period, apprentices gain hands-on experience in transport operations, engineering maintenance, fleet management, administration, and public service systems. This practical exposure strengthens a candidate’s resume and improves employability in both government and private sectors after the apprenticeship.

How the Transport Sector Is Creating New Opportunities

Tamil Nadu operates one of India’s largest public road transport systems, serving millions of passengers every day. With expanding bus fleets, digital ticketing systems, electric vehicle adoption, and modernization of workshops, transport corporations require skilled technical and administrative manpower. Apprenticeship programmes help bridge the gap between academic education and real workplace requirements while preparing candidates for future employment.

Why Apprenticeships Matter More Than Classroom Learning

Many graduates complete their degrees with limited industrial exposure. Apprenticeship training provides an opportunity to work with experienced professionals, understand workplace discipline, develop communication skills, and learn modern operational practices. These practical skills often become a major advantage during future job interviews and recruitment processes.

Career Opportunities After Completing the Apprenticeship

Although the notification clearly states that apprenticeship training does not guarantee permanent employment, candidates who successfully complete the programme gain valuable experience recognized under the Apprenticeship Act. This experience can strengthen applications for future PSU recruitments, transport departments, automobile companies, manufacturing industries, logistics firms, and other engineering or administrative organizations.

Growing Demand for Mechanical and Automobile Engineers

The vacancy distribution shows that Mechanical and Automobile Engineering account for the majority of engineering apprenticeship positions. This reflects the increasing demand for professionals capable of maintaining large public transport fleets, managing vehicle diagnostics, supporting preventive maintenance, and contributing to the modernization of transport infrastructure.

Digital Recruitment Is Becoming the New Standard

The recruitment process is conducted entirely through the NATS portal, from registration to application and shortlisting. This digital-first approach improves transparency, speeds up candidate verification, and minimizes paperwork. Candidates should ensure that their academic details, percentage/CGPA, and uploaded documents are accurate, as incorrect information may affect shortlisting.

Expert Insight: Make the Most of the Training Period

Candidates selected for the apprenticeship should treat the programme as a professional learning opportunity rather than just a one-year stipend-based engagement. Building technical skills, learning workplace software, understanding transport operations, and networking with experienced professionals can significantly improve future career prospects. Many employers value practical apprenticeship experience when hiring fresh graduates for technical and administrative roles.
