Read This First: This Is Apprenticeship Training, Not a Job

This notification is easy to misread. TNMVMD is not hiring employees. It is taking 79 apprentices for one year of on-the-job training under the Apprenticeship Act. Some job sites list the posts as “contract” jobs and show the amount as salary. The notification itself uses the word stipend, and says the department has no obligation to offer employment after the training ends. An apprentice cannot claim a job on the basis of having completed it.

That does not make it a bad opportunity. For a fresh mechanical or automobile engineer, a year inside a government vehicle maintenance setup in Chennai means real workshop exposure, a certificate, and something to put on a CV. But you should apply knowing that the money is a stipend of ₹10,900 or ₹12,300 a month, and that nothing is promised at the end.

The window is short. Today is 20 October 2026 and applications close on 29 October, which leaves nine days. Because the whole selection depends on the percentage of marks entered on the portal, most of the work in the next few days is getting your NATS profile and marks right.

Note: This post follows the official notification issued by TNMVMD, Chennai and Director of Training, BOAT (SR), Taramani, Chennai. Dates marked tentative can change. Always confirm on nats.education.gov.in.

Important Dates

  • Online Application Starts: 29 September 2026
  • Last Date to Apply: 29 October 2026
  • Declaration of Shortlisted List: Second week of November 2026
  • Certificate Verification at TNMVMD, Chennai: Fourth week of November 2026 (tentative)
The notification gives the shortlist and verification dates only as a week of the month. Some job sites show exact dates like 7 November and 23 November, but the official notification does not.

Training Places and Stipend

Category / Branch Places | Stipend | Duration
Category I: Graduate Apprentice, Mechanical / Automobile Engineering 18 | ₹12,300 per month | One year
Category II: Diploma (Technician) Apprentice, Mechanical / Automobile Engineering 61 | ₹10,900 per month | One year
Total 79 places
Over twelve months the stipend works out to ₹1,47,600 for a graduate apprentice and ₹1,30,800 for a diploma apprentice. TNMVMD can increase or decrease the number of places even after the notification, so the numbers are not fixed.

Age Limit As per the Apprenticeship Rules. The notification does not give a number.
Physical Standards As prescribed in Clause 4 of the Apprenticeship Rules 1992 and its amendments
Who is not eligible:
  • Anyone who has already completed an apprenticeship under the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Act 1973
  • Anyone currently undergoing an apprenticeship under the same Act
  • Anyone with one year or more of work experience

Points many candidates miss:

  • The passing year window starts at 2022. A candidate who passed in 2021 or earlier is outside it.
  • Only regular, full-time courses count. Part-time or distance qualifications do not match the wording.
  • Only Mechanical and Automobile Engineering are listed. Other branches such as Electrical or Civil are not mentioned.
  • The portal needs your degree or diploma provisional certificate or consolidated mark sheet, so the course should be completed.

Reservation

The reservation guidelines under the Apprentices Act for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates will be followed. The notification does not publish a category-wise count of places. The condition that matters:
  • If you claim reservation, you must provide the certificate in the Government’s standard format. Without it, your claim is treated as General.
  • BC and MBC candidates claiming the OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) category must bring an OBC (NCL) certificate in the approved format from the issuing authority.

Selection Process

There is no written exam and no interview announced. The Board of Apprenticeship Training (Southern Region), Chennai prepares a shortlist from the online application data. The shortlist is made on the percentage of marks you obtained in your basic qualification for your discipline, that is your engineering degree if you are a graduate applicant, and your diploma if you are a diploma applicant.
  • Step 1, shortlist: Based only on percentage of marks, from the data you enter in NATS.
  • Step 2, intimation: Shortlisted candidates are told through their registered email ID.
  • Step 3, certificate verification: Shortlisted candidates appear at TNMVMD, Chennai with their documents.

No cut-off percentage has been published and the number of applicants is not known. Treat this as a merit race on marks, and plan to be on the safe side.

The percentage rule is strict: You must enter your percentage of marks in the column called ‘% of marks / CGPAx10’ on NATS. If the percentage is not furnished, your candidature will not be considered.

How to Apply on NATS: Pick Your Type

You must apply through the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme portal. Which route you follow depends on whether you already have a NATS account.

Type A: You registered on the old portal (www.mhrdnats.gov.in)

  • Go to https://nats.education.gov.in, click Student, then Student login, then Forgot Password
  • Enter your registered email ID to get the activation link and reset your password
  • Log in with your email ID and new password and complete the application form. A unique 12-digit enrolment number is generated for you
  • After this migration, log in again, go to ‘Apply against advertised vacancies’, search for TAMIL NADU MOTOR VEHICLES MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT and click Apply

Type B: You already have an account on the new portal (nats.education.gov.in)

  • Log in with your email ID and password
  • Under ‘Apply against advertised vacancies’, search for TAMIL NADU MOTOR VEHICLES MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT
  • Click Apply. The status should show as ‘applied’

Type C: You have never registered on NATS

  • Go to https://nats.education.gov.in, click Student, then Student Register
  • Complete the form. A unique 12-digit enrolment number is generated
  • Log in, go to ‘Apply against advertised vacancies’, search for the department name and click Apply

Before you submit: upload your B.E./B.Tech or Diploma provisional certificate or consolidated mark sheet, and enter your percentage of marks in the ‘% of marks / CGPAx10’ column. Check that your status reads ‘applied’ after submission.

New registration and email activation can take time, so a Type C candidate should not wait for the last day. Do the registration today and the application tomorrow.

Documents and Details to Keep Ready

  • Provisional certificate or consolidated mark sheet of your B.E./B.Tech or Diploma (mandatory for the portal)
  • Your exact percentage of marks. If your university gives only CGPA, the portal column is ‘% of marks / CGPAx10’, so check what your university’s own conversion says before entering it
  • A working email ID and mobile number. The shortlist is sent by email
  • Category certificate in the Government’s standard format, if claiming SC, ST, OBC or PwD reservation
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate in the approved format, for BC and MBC candidates claiming OBC (NCL)
  • Proof of being from Tamil Nadu, and your marks sheets and identity proof. The notification does not list these by name, but they are normally checked at verification, so carry originals
Take any name or mark mismatch seriously. Whatever you enter on the portal is what the shortlist is built from, and a different figure at verification can cost you the place.

After the Shortlist: Certificate Verification in Chennai

  • The shortlist is published on the NATS portal. Go to the home page, scroll to the bottom, open Regional Events, click BOAT (Southern Region), then Apprenticeship News.
  • Shortlisted candidates also receive an email, so keep checking your inbox and spam folder.
  • Verification is at TNMVMD, Chennai, tentatively in the fourth week of November 2026.
  • No TA or DA is paid for attending certificate verification, and no boarding or lodging expenses are given. Plan your travel and stay yourself.

Terms and Warnings From the Notification

  • After completing the apprenticeship, TNMVMD has no obligation to offer employment, and you cannot claim a right to a job.
  • Incomplete or incorrect applications received after the due date will be rejected, and no further communication is entertained.
  • The Board has not authorised any individual or organisation to coordinate or liaise on its behalf. Beware of touts. Do not pay anyone for a seat.
  • Canvassing or pressuring through any source will disqualify your candidature, and your name will be removed from the records without notice.
  • For clarifications or enrolment verification, write to tncop@boat-srp.com.

What Kind of Work to Expect

The notification does not publish a training syllabus, so the details below are general, not promised. The department looks after the maintenance and repair of government-owned vehicles in Tamil Nadu. Apprentices in a setup like this normally work alongside workshop staff on routine servicing, diagnosis and repairs, and learn the records and procedures that go with a government fleet.

If you are choosing between this and other options, ask yourself three things. First, do you want hands-on vehicle workshop experience in Chennai? Second, can you manage a year on ₹10,900 to ₹12,300 a month, including your own accommodation? Third, are you prepared for the possibility that it leads to nothing permanent, and keep applying for jobs during the year? If the answers are yes, it is worth the form.

Mistakes That Can Cost You a Place

  • Leaving the percentage column blank. The notification says candidature will not be considered.
  • Entering a rounded-up percentage that does not match your mark sheet.
  • Applying with a branch other than Mechanical or Automobile Engineering.
  • Applying when you passed before 2022, or when you already have a year of experience or an earlier apprenticeship.
  • Using an email ID you rarely open. The shortlist comes by email.
  • Starting NATS registration on 28 October. Old-portal accounts need a password reset and activation first.
  • Claiming a reservation without the certificate in the prescribed format. The claim then counts as General.
  • Trusting anyone who promises a seat for money.
