MPSC Talathi Bharti 2026 – Selection Process

Selection is done in stages. The preliminary exam is only a screening test – its marks are not counted in the final merit list. The mains exam decides the merit, and document verification is the last step before appointment. There is no interview and no typing test or physical test for the Talathi post.

  1. Preliminary Examination: A common objective paper of 100 questions and 100 marks in 60 minutes. Candidates who clear it move to the mains examination.
  2. Mains Examination: Two papers – Paper I (common) and Paper II (post-specific). The mains marks decide the final merit list.
  3. Document Verification: Shortlisted candidates must produce their original certificates and documents for verification before the final appointment.

MPSC Talathi Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

The preliminary examination is a single common paper for all Group C posts, including Talathi. It is held offline in OMR mode, in Marathi and English. There is negative marking of 1/4th mark (0.25) for every wrong answer.

Particulars Details

Total Marks 100 (1 mark per question)
Duration 60 Minutes (1 Hour)
Mode Offline, OMR Based
Medium Marathi and English
Negative Marking 0.25 marks per wrong answer
Subjects Marathi, English, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Mathematics and Reasoning, Indian Polity, History (with focus on Maharashtra), Geography (with focus on Maharashtra), Economics and General Science

MPSC Talathi Mains Exam Pattern

Only candidates who clear the preliminary examination appear for the mains examination. The mains marks decide the final merit list.

  • Mains Paper I (Common): Marathi and English and General Knowledge – 100 marks.
  • Mains Paper II (Post Specific): General Ability Test and subject-specific paper for the Talathi post – the questions, marks and duration are as given in the scheme of examination in the notification.
  • Joint Main Examination: 400 marks for most cadres, including Talathi.
  • Negative Marking: 1/4th mark (0.25) is deducted for every wrong answer in the objective papers, as in the prelims.

The mains examination date will be announced separately after the preliminary result.

MPSC Talathi Syllabus 2026 – Important Note

The official notification does not give a separate Talathi-only syllabus. Talathi candidates take the same common Group-C Services Combined Preliminary Examination as all other Group C posts, and the mains papers follow the same scheme. Do not follow the old standalone Talathi exam pattern (four subjects of 25 marks each in 2 hours) – that pattern no longer applies, because Talathi is now part of the combined Group C examination.

Prelims syllabus topics: Marathi (grammar, vocabulary and comprehension), English (basic grammar, sentence structure and usage), General Knowledge and Current Affairs (Maharashtra and India), Mathematics and Reasoning (arithmetic, percentages, ratio, averages and basic algebra), Indian Polity, History of Maharashtra, Geography of Maharashtra, Economics and General Science.

Mains syllabus topics: Marathi, English and General Knowledge in Paper I, and the General Ability Test with Talathi-related subjects in Paper II, as per the scheme of examination in the notification. Read the notification annexure for the exact Paper II topics for the Talathi post before you start preparation.
