Phase 2 Cut Off vs Final Cut Off — Simple Explanation

  • Phase 2 cut-off (out of 300): The minimum aggregate score needed to be called for the interview
  • Final cut-off (out of 375): The score of the last candidate who got selected, after adding the interview marks (75)
  • Phase 1: Only qualifying. Its marks are not added to the final merit
  • For the General category, the final cut-off (241.25) is 55.25 marks higher than the Phase 2 cut-off (186.00). This gap shows how much interview performance can matter for the last selected candidate
  • A candidate with a Phase 2 score just above the cut-off needs a very strong interview to reach the final cut-off. A candidate with a much higher Phase 2 score needs fewer interview marks
  • Each category has its own cut-off, so compare yourself only with your own category
Category 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 (Phase 2 Cut Off)
General / UR 171.25 | 169.00 | 173.50 | 171.50 | 186.00
EWS 171.25 | 169.00 | 173.50 | 163.75 | 168.75
OBC 167.00 | 169.00 | 169.00 | 164.25 | 177.50
SC 150.50 | 156.00 | 165.00 | 157.75 | 175.75
ST 150.25 | 148.50 | 161.50 | 155.50 | 172.50
Note: Earlier-year figures are given in the reference page for trend reference. Please verify them in RBI’s year-wise result notices.
Category Change from 2025 to 2026 (Phase 2 Cut Off)
General / UR +14.50 (171.50 → 186.00)
EWS +5.00 (163.75 → 168.75)
OBC +13.25 (164.25 → 177.50)
SC +18.00 (157.75 → 175.75)
ST +17.00 (155.50 → 172.50)

What Does the Year-wise Trend Tell You?

  • From 2022 to 2025, the General Phase 2 cut-off stayed in a narrow range of about 169 to 173.5. In 2026, it jumped to 186.00
  • The SC and ST cut-offs saw the biggest rise in 2026 (about +18 and +17 marks over 2025)
  • The EWS cut-off rose the least (+5.00) compared to 2025
  • A higher cut-off usually means that candidates performed well in Phase 2, or that fewer candidates were called for the interview for the number of vacancies
  • This year only 127 roll numbers were shortlisted for the General interview, as per the reference page. With a small interview group, the cut-off tends to rise
  • For your next attempt, aim for a Phase 2 score well above 186 if you are in the General category, so that you have a safe margin

What Affects the RBI Grade B Phase 2 Cut Off?

  • Number of vacancies: More posts allow more candidates to be called for the interview. This year the notified vacancies were 60 in total (General 40, DEPR 10, DSIM 10)
  • Difficulty of the papers: Especially the descriptive English paper and the subject papers
  • Overall performance of candidates: Higher average scores push the cut-off up
  • Category-wise competition: Each category has its own cut-off
  • Number of candidates called: If RBI calls a smaller group for the interview, the cut-off is usually higher
Paper (General Stream) Subject | Marks
Paper I Economic and Social Issues | 100
Paper II English (Writing Skills) | 100
Paper III Finance and Management | 100
Total 300

Selection Process — Quick Reminder

  • Phase 1 (Prelims): Qualifying in nature
  • Phase 2 (Mains): 300 marks — three papers as shown above (General stream)
  • Phase 3 (Interview): 75 marks
  • Final selection: Based on the combined score of Phase 2 and the interview, out of 375
  • Sectional cut-off: The sources we reviewed say the published cut-off marks are aggregate marks out of 300. Paper-wise minimum qualifying marks are not available in the published figures
  • The paper structure for DEPR and DSIM is different and is not covered in this article

How to Use the Cut Off for Your Next Attempt

  • Step 1: Open your scorecard and note your marks in each paper and your total
  • Step 2: Compare your total with the Phase 2 cut-off of your category. Find the gap
  • Step 3: If the gap is small, work on your weakest paper. If it is large, plan a full revision
  • Step 4: Set a target of 15 to 20 marks above the cut-off, because cut-offs can change from year to year
  • Step 5: Prepare for the interview early, because it can add or remove up to 75 marks
  • Step 6: Join test series and practise answer writing for Phase 2
  • Remember that this year’s cut-off is higher than the past four years. Plan for a tougher competition next time

Paper-wise Preparation Tips

  • Paper I — Economic and Social Issues: Read about the Indian economy, growth, inflation, poverty, employment, government schemes and social issues. Follow the Economic Survey, Union Budget and reliable newspapers
  • Paper II — English (Writing Skills): Practise essays, précis and comprehension. Focus on clear points, simple language, correct grammar and good time management
  • Paper III — Finance and Management: Revise the financial system, banking, markets, regulators and basic management concepts. Read RBI reports and policy statements
  • Practise writing answers by hand within the time limit
  • Take full-length mock tests for Phase 2 and review them with a mentor or a friend
  • Keep short notes for revision in the last month

Interview Preparation Tips (75 Marks)

  • Prepare your profile — education, work, hobbies and reasons for joining the RBI
  • Revise topics on economy, banking, monetary policy, financial inclusion, digital payments and RBI’s role
  • Follow current affairs and read about recent RBI policy decisions
  • Practise speaking clearly and honestly. If you do not know an answer, say so politely
  • Do two or three mock interviews and get feedback
  • Keep your documents ready and dress neatly
  • Remember that the gap between the General Phase 2 cut-off and the final cut-off is 55.25 marks. A strong interview can make a big difference

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Comparing your marks with another category’s cut-off
  • Using the General Cadre cut-off for DEPR or DSIM streams
  • Believing unofficial cut-off numbers on social media instead of the official RBI page
  • Depending only on Phase 1 preparation. Phase 2 and the interview decide the final merit
  • Ignoring English writing practice, since Paper II needs regular writing
  • Leaving interview preparation for the last week

Important Warnings

  • Use only the official RBI website for cut-offs, scorecards and results
  • Do not trust anyone who promises “sure selection” or “marks increase”. RBI never takes money for selection
  • Do not share your roll number or date of birth with unknown persons
  • If any detail in this article differs from the RBI website, the RBI website is final
  • This article is based on the reference page and the official cut-off details reported on 30 October 2026. The comparison with earlier years is taken from the reference page and should be verified from RBI notices
