East Coast Railway, through the Railway Recruitment Cell at Bhubaneswar, released this centralized notification (No. ECoR/Pers/RRC/Act Apprentice/2026-27) on 21 August 2026. Applications have been open since 26 August, and the window closes 15 September 2026, 5:00 PM — about a week from today. There’s no written exam or interview anywhere in this process, so once you submit, the next real event you’re waiting for is the merit list itself.
Here’s a detail worth getting right before you even calculate your eligibility: your percentage for this recruitment is computed from marks in all subjects of your Matriculation certificate — not the “best of five” aggregate that many state boards print as the headline percentage on the certificate itself. If your board follows a best-of-five system and your certificate shows, say, 68%, your actual all-subjects percentage for ECoR’s merit calculation could be meaningfully different — higher or lower. Recalculate this yourself from your full marksheet rather than quoting the number on your certificate’s front page.

Khurda Road Division alone accounts for nearly half the total vacancy pool — 773 of 1,599 — while ECoR Headquarters carries just 22. Category-wise, the split is UR 633, OBC 435, SC 251, EWS 164, ST 116, PwBD 50, and ESM 42, with PwBD (4%) and Ex-Servicemen (3%) reservation applied horizontally within these totals rather than as separate additional slots.
The 25 designated trades span Fitter, Welder, Turner, Machinist, Electrician, Carpenter, Painter, Mechanic (Diesel), Secretarial Assistant (Stenography), Black Smith, Driller, Bridge Erector, Sheet Metal Worker, Electronics Mechanic, Wireman/Electrician, Mechanic Refrigeration & AC, Plumber, Draftsman (Civil), Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Computer Operator & Programming Assistant, Laboratory Technician (Pathology), Sarang, Grinder, Mason, and Draftsman (Mechanic).
Eligibility — The Baseline, and Three Trades That Break From It
The general requirement is Matriculation with a minimum 50% aggregate, held as on the notification date (21 August 2026, not the application closing date), plus an NCVT/SCVT-affiliated ITI certificate in your target trade.
Two conditions worth flagging plainly: if your SSC or ITI result is still awaited as of the notification date, you’re not eligible — there’s no provisional consideration here, unlike some recruitments that allow “result awaited” applicants to proceed conditionally. And if you’ve failed your ITI, you must not apply at all; if such a candidate is inadvertently engaged, the apprenticeship gets terminated immediately once discovered, with no grace period.
Engineering graduates and diploma holders are explicitly not eligible under this notification — they fall under a separate graduate/technician apprenticeship scheme entirely, so don’t apply here expecting your B.Tech or diploma to count toward eligibility.
Three trades carry qualification requirements that diverge from the standard Matric+ITI combination:
- Laboratory Technician (Pathology): 12th pass with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, minimum 50% in both 10th and 12th — no ITI requirement at all for this specific trade.
- Secretarial Assistant (Stenography): requires a National Trade Certificate (NTC) approved by NCVT/SCVT in stenography specifically.
- Computer Operator & Programming Assistant: requires board-based basic training in the IT sector under the Centre of Excellence scheme (hardware/networking repair and maintenance), with an NTC approved by NCVT/SCVT.
If you hold ITI qualifications in more than one trade, you can apply separately for each relevant trade — this isn’t restricted to a single trade application per candidate, provided you genuinely qualify for each one.
Age Limit
Reckoned as on the closing date, 15 September 2026.
| Category | Age Relaxation |
|---|---|
| General | 15 to 24 years |
| SC/ST | +5 years |
| OBC | +3 years |
| PwBD | +10 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | +10 years to the extent of Defence service, plus 3 years (minimum 6 months’ continuous service required; applies to the ex-serviceman personally, not their children) |
Children of deceased/disabled Ex-Servicemen, children of Ex-Servicemen, children of serving Jawans, and children of serving Officers are also considered under specified categories, each with age relaxation matching their applicable community category.
Application Fee
Rs. 100 for General/OBC/EWS male candidates, non-refundable. SC/ST/PwBD candidates and women of any category pay nothing. Fee is online-only, through the integrated payment gateway.
Stipend
A monthly stipend is paid during training at the rate prescribed by the Railway Board from time to time — the notification itself doesn’t state a specific rupee figure, so treat any exact number you see quoted elsewhere as an estimate rather than an official one until confirmed via Railway Board circulars. No hostel accommodation is provided — apprentices need to arrange their own stay during the training period, which is worth factoring in if your selected unit/division is far from home.
Selection Process — And the Two-Layer Preference System Worth Understanding
Selection is entirely merit-based on your Matriculation percentage — no written test, no interview, at any stage. A trade-wise and community-wise merit list gets prepared, and candidates are called for Document Verification at ECoR Headquarters, Bhubaneswar, strictly by merit within their preferred trade.
Two separate rules interact here, and it’s worth being clear on which applies where. First: you can select only one Division/Workshop overall, and that choice is final and binding — you can’t apply hoping to be considered across multiple ECoR divisions simultaneously. Second: within your chosen division, you can exercise a preference order across Unit-Department-Trade combinations — and once you’re selected against a higher preference in that order, all your lower preferences within that same division are automatically cancelled. So the “one choice” constraint is at the division level; your trade/department preferences within that division can still be ranked.
For tied marks, the older candidate is prioritised; if birthdates are also identical, whoever passed Matriculation earlier gets preference. Final selection remains subject to original document verification and a Medical Fitness Certificate. Standby-list candidates only receive call letters once ECoR has details of absentee, unfit, or rejected candidates from the primary list — strictly in merit order, not on a first-come basis. No TA/DA is paid for attending Document Verification.
What This Apprenticeship Actually Leads To — And Doesn’t
Worth stating plainly: apprentices trained under this scheme have no claim to employment with the Railways after completing training. This is standard under the Apprentices Act framework, but it bears repeating given how many candidates approach railway apprenticeships assuming a natural progression into a permanent railway job.
That said, there’s a genuine, documented pathway worth knowing about: candidates who complete their apprenticeship training (referred to as CCAA) and hold a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) get preference for up to 20% of Level-1 direct-recruitment vacancies in future railway recruitment cycles, subject to meeting RRB/RRC’s own eligibility criteria at that time. This isn’t automatic reemployment and isn’t part of this specific selection process — it’s a separate benefit tied to holding the NAC once you’ve completed training, worth keeping documentation of once you finish.
Documents to Have Ready
- Matriculation (Class X) mark sheet and pass certificate
- Date of birth proof, if not shown on the Matric certificate
- Consolidated ITI mark sheet for all semesters in the relevant trade, or Provisional NTC
- National Trade Certificate (NCVT) or Provisional Trade Certificate (NCVT/SCVT)
- Caste certificate for SC/ST/OBC (OBC needs a Non-Creamy-Layer certificate valid for 2026–27, issued on or after 1 April 2026, plus self-declaration)
- Income and Asset Certificate for EWS (family gross annual income below Rs. 8 lakh, within specified asset limits)
- Disability certificate for PwBD candidates
- Discharge/Serving Certificate for Ex-Servicemen quota candidates
- Scanned photograph (3.5cm × 3.5cm, 100 DPI, 20–70 KB) and signature (same dimensions, 20–30 KB)
- Aadhaar card (12-digit number, or 28-digit Enrolment ID if the card itself hasn’t arrived yet)
How to Apply
- Visit www.rrcbbs.org.in and register.
- Log in and fill in personal details, trade choice, Aadhaar number, marks/CGPA, and your Division/Workshop choice — remember, only one division can be selected, and it’s binding.
- Upload your scanned photograph, signature, and all required documents.
- Pay the Rs. 100 fee online, if applicable to your category.
- Take a printout of your submitted application for your own records. No physical copy needs to be posted to RRC/BBS.
Only one application per candidate is allowed; multiple applications for the same trade with different details will be summarily rejected, not just the duplicate one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. My board certificate shows a “best of 5” percentage of 65% — is that what ECoR will use for my merit ranking?
No. ECoR calculates your percentage from marks across all subjects in your Matriculation, not the best-of-five figure your certificate may display. Recalculate your actual all-subjects percentage before assuming your certificate’s headline number applies here.
Q2. My SSC result is still awaited — can I apply now and submit the certificate later?
No. The notification states applicants whose SSC or ITI results are awaited as on the notification date (21 August 2026) are not eligible. There’s no provisional application route for this.
Q3. I hold ITI certificates in both Fitter and Electrician — can I apply for both trades?
Yes. Candidates holding ITI qualifications in more than one relevant trade can apply separately for each trade they genuinely qualify for.
Q4. Can I apply preferring both RGDA Division and Khurda Road Division, hoping for either?
No. You can select only one Division/Workshop overall, and that choice is final and binding. Within that single chosen division, though, you can rank multiple Unit-Department-Trade preferences.
Q5. Does completing this apprenticeship guarantee me a railway job afterward?
No. The notification states clearly that apprentices have no claim to employment with the Railways after training. However, candidates who complete training and hold a National Apprenticeship Certificate get preference for up to 20% of future Level-1 direct-recruitment vacancies, subject to the eligibility rules applicable at that time.
Disclaimer: Vacancy figures (1,599 across 25 trades and 5 units), eligibility, age limits, fee, and selection process above are drawn from ECoR’s official Notification No. ECoR/Pers/RRC/Act Apprentice/2026-27 dated 21 August 2026. The exact stipend amount and Document Verification schedule are not detailed in the notification itself. For the latest updates, check the official website: https://www.rrcbbs.org.in.
