The MP Karamchari Chayan Mandal (ESB), Bhopal released the official rulebook and notification for the Subedar/Sub Inspector Cadre Selection Exam 2026 on 1 September 2026, and online applications open on 9 September 2026. What’s not yet fixed: the exact preliminary exam cutoff percentile for each category — the notification itself states this will be dynamic and cannot be decided before the exam, and the exam city allotment for individual candidates, which comes only after the application window closes.
What’s Confirmed, From the Rulebook Itself
This recruitment falls under the Police Headquarters, Home (Police) Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, conducted via letter no. पुमु/2-चयन/स-1/997/26 dated 30 July 2026. The exam itself is administered by MP ESB.

The Domicile Rule Most Candidates Miss
Candidates who are not permanent residents (domicile) of Madhya Pradesh can apply only under the Unreserved/Open category — no reservation benefit, no age relaxation, regardless of their actual caste category elsewhere. Their age ceiling is fixed at a flat 33 years as on the application closing date, with none of the extended limits (38 or 43 years) available to MP domicile candidates in reserved or special categories. A candidate from another state assuming their home-state SC/ST/OBC certificate carries any weight here is working from a wrong assumption — it carries none.
Eligibility and Age Limit
| Category | Maximum Age |
|---|---|
| Male, MP Unreserved | 33 years |
| Male, MP EWS | 33 years |
| Male/Female, other-state domicile (any category) | 33 years |
| Female, all categories (MP domicile) | 38 years |
| Male, reserved category (SC/ST/OBC, MP domicile) | 38 years |
| Male, govt/corporation/board/autonomous body employee or Home Guard | 38 years |
| Male, inter-caste marriage (with reserved-category spouse) | 38 years |
| Female, inter-caste marriage | 43 years |
| Male, Vikram Award winner (Unreserved) | 38 years |
| Female, Vikram Award winner (any category) | 43 years |
| Male, Vikram Award winner (reserved category) | 43 years |
Age is reckoned as on the last date of online application (23 September 2026). Educational qualification requirements differ by post: Subedar, SI (SAF), and SI (District Police Force) need a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in any discipline. SI (Arms) needs a three-year diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized technical university. SI (Photo/QD/Finger Print) needs a bachelor’s degree with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
One clause worth flagging: a candidate with more than two living children, where one was born on or after 26 January 2001, is not eligible — a rule several state police recruitments carry, and easy to overlook if you’re focused only on age and education criteria.
Application Fee
- Unreserved candidates: Rs. 500
- SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates (MP domicile only): Rs. 250
- Portal fee: Rs. 60 if applying via kiosk, Rs. 20 if applying directly as a registered citizen user
Fee categories for the departmental exam route (for serving police personnel taking this as their second-stage written exam) are separate: Rs. 200 for unreserved, Rs. 100 for reserved departmental candidates.
Selection Process — Two Stages, and a Detail That Changes How You Should Prepare
Stage One: Preliminary Written Exam. Objective-type, 100 marks, 2 hours, covering Hindi comprehension, English comprehension, analytical ability, history, geography, science, civics, basic computer knowledge, reasoning, and current affairs. No negative marking here.
Here’s the part that surprises many first-time applicants: marks scored in the Preliminary exam carry no weight in final selection whatsoever. The rulebook states this plainly — Prelims exists purely to shortlist 10 times the advertised vacancies, category-wise, for the Main exam. Once you clear the cutoff, your Prelim score is discarded. Everything after that point — Main exam, Physical Efficiency Test, Interview — determines your actual rank. Treating Prelims as anything other than a qualifying hurdle wastes prep time that should go toward Main exam depth.
The cutoff itself is not fixed in advance. It’s whatever percentile the 10x-vacancy cutoff lands on for each vertical category (UR/OBC/SC/ST/EWS) — dynamic, and only knowable after the exam is scored.
Stage Two has three components:
- Main Written Exam — two compulsory General Studies papers (300 marks each, 2 hours each) for every candidate, non-technical and technical alike. Technical post applicants additionally sit a third paper: Group 1 (SI Arms) gets a Mechanical Engineering-based paper; Group 2 (SI Photo/QD/Finger Print) gets a Maths-Physics-Chemistry paper. Each paper carries a 1/3 mark negative penalty for wrong answers — unlike Prelims, guessing here has a real cost.
- Physical Efficiency Test (PET) — 100 marks: 800m run (40 marks, one attempt only), long jump (30 marks, three attempts), shot put (30 marks, three attempts). Minimum qualifying marks are 30 for non-technical posts, 20 for technical posts. No medical or any other ground exempts a candidate from PET, and the notified test date cannot be changed for any candidate under any circumstance — the rulebook repeats this warning twice.
- Interview — 50 marks, conducted only for candidates who clear both the PET minimum and document verification.
Selection for PET and Interview is drawn from 3 times the advertised vacancies, based on Main exam performance, category-wise.
Bonus Marks — A Narrow, Specific Provision
Certain categories — dependents of soldiers killed in the recent India-Pakistan conflict, ex-servicemen, retrenched government employees, 1981-census surplus staff, NCC ‘C’ certificate holders, and Indian citizens who migrated from Myanmar or Sri Lanka — receive 5% bonus marks, but only in the Preliminary exam, per General Administration Department orders cited in the rulebook. This bonus does not carry over to the Main exam or PET.
Normalization
Since the exam runs across two shifts each day (first shift 10:00 AM–12:00 PM, second shift 3:00 PM–5:00 PM), MP ESB applies a Normalised Equi-Percentile (NEP) scaling technique to adjust for shift-difficulty variation, per ESB’s own order dated 13 February 2025 governing all its multi-shift exams. For the two-stage structure here (written exam followed by physical/personal test), ESB computes percentile scores, converts them to Z-values and T-scores, then adds the Physical/Interview marks to the T-score to build the final merit list — raw marks alone don’t determine your rank if you and a friend sat different shifts.
Physical Standards (Pre-Appointment Medical)
- Height: Male 167.5 cm minimum; Female 152.4 cm minimum
- Chest (male only): minimum 81 cm unexpanded, 86 cm expanded — a minimum 5 cm expansion is mandatory, with no relaxation permitted
- Vision: 6/9 in one eye, 6/12 in the other, uncorrected; color vision tested via Ishihara plates (district/divisional level) and Anomaloscope test (state level)
- No knock-knee or flat feet
Posting and Service Conditions
Selected candidates will not be posted in their home district. A minimum of 5 years’ service in the assigned unit is required before becoming eligible for transfer. Appointees serve a three-year probationary period with graduated stipend — 70% of minimum pay in year one, 80% in year two, 90% in year three, per the applicable GAD circular.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. I’m from Uttar Pradesh with an OBC certificate — can I use it for reservation in this MP recruitment?
No. Non-MP domicile candidates can apply only under the Unreserved category regardless of their caste certificate from another state, and get no age relaxation. Your maximum age is fixed at 33 years.

No. Preliminary marks are used only to shortlist candidates for the Main exam and are discarded afterward. Final merit is based entirely on Main exam, PET, and Interview marks.
Q3. Can I apply for SI (Special Armed Force) as a female candidate?
No. The rulebook states explicitly that SI (SAF) posts will be filled only by male candidates.
Q4. I have a minor medical issue on my PET date — can I request a different date?
No. The rulebook states clearly that no medical certificate or any other document will be accepted as grounds for changing your notified Physical Efficiency Test date.
Q5. Will I be posted in my home district if selected?
No. The rulebook states selected candidates will not be given postings in their home district, and a minimum of 5 years’ service in the assigned unit is required before any transfer request is considered.
