What Is a Provisional Merit List? – Simple Explanation
|
- It is the first draft of the state rank list made by the CET Cell from the information you gave in your application
- It shows the state merit position of registered candidates. This position decides your chance in seat allotment
- Because it is only a draft, it can have mistakes. That is why you get two days (29 and 30 October) to raise a grievance
- After checking grievances, the CET Cell publishes the final state merit list on 1 November 2026
- Only the final merit list is used for CAP Round 1 seat allotment
|

|
Details to Check in the Merit List
|
- Your name, spelled exactly as in your documents
- NEET PG roll number and application number
- NEET PG score or rank as used in the list
- State merit position (your rank in the Maharashtra list)
- Your category and any special reservation shown
- Domicile or quota status, if shown
- Any remark about your documents or verification status
If anything is wrong, note down the exact mistake and keep proof ready for the grievance window.
|
How the State Merit List Is Prepared
|
- The list is based on your NEET PG 2026 score
- Your domicile and category are also used, as reported by counselling guides
- Only candidates whose registration, fee and documents are complete are placed in the list
- There is a separate in-service state merit list for in-service candidates, which is also scheduled for 1 November 2026
- The CAP covers the 50% state quota seats and the private unaided seats, as reported by education portals
Exact rules are given in the official information brochure. Please read it once fully.
|
Merit List Grievance – What to Do on 29 and 30 October
|
- Check your name and details in the provisional list on 28 October itself
- If you find a mistake (name, category, score, domicile), write down what is wrong and what should be correct
- Keep the supporting document ready, such as your NEET PG scorecard or certificate
- Open the grievance option on the official portal during the window of 29 and 30 October
- Submit the grievance clearly and keep a screenshot or receipt
- Do not wait for the last evening. The portal may be slow when many candidates log in
Grievances sent after the window may not be accepted, so please plan your time.
|
Eligibility – Who Can Take Part in Maharashtra NEET PG Counselling?
|
- You must have a qualifying NEET PG 2026 score
- You must hold a valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or a State Medical Council. Provisional registration may be accepted as per the brochure
- A valid Maharashtra domicile is generally needed for state quota seats
- You must complete registration, fee payment and document upload on time
These points are from education portals. For exact eligibility, read the official brochure of 16 October 2026.
|
Documents You Should Keep Ready
|
- NEET PG 2026 scorecard and admit card
- MBBS degree or provisional certificate and internship completion certificate
- NMC or State Medical Council registration certificate

Please confirm the exact amounts in the official brochure.
|
Choice Filling Guide – 2 to 4 November 2026
|
- Wait for the seat matrix: It comes out on 1 November together with the final merit list. Do not decide your list before seeing the available seats
- Make a long list: Add as many courses and colleges as you like, in the order you prefer. A longer list does not hurt you, because you get the first choice that your rank allows
- Put dream choices first: Place your best choices at the top and safer choices lower
- Think about branch first, then college: Decide whether branch or college is more important to you and arrange your list on that basis
- Check fees and bond rules: Government and private colleges have different fees. Check any service bond rules in the brochure
- Lock and save carefully: Submit before 11:59 PM on 4 November and take a printout or screenshot of your final list
|
| Note: Do not leave choice filling for the last hour. Servers become slow near the deadline. |
After the CAP Round 1 Selection List (5 November 2026)
|
- Check the selection list on 5 November 2026 on the official portal
- Note the college and course allotted to you
- Read the instructions for accepting the seat and what to do if you are not happy with the allotment
- Report to the allotted college between 6 and 10 November 2026, up to 5:30 PM
- Carry original documents, photocopies, fee payment proof and your allotment letter
- If you do not join in time, you may lose the seat, so plan your travel early

Counselling Rounds – What to Expect After Round 1
|
- As reported by counselling guides, Maharashtra PG counselling usually has Round 1, Round 2, a mop-up round and a stray vacancy round
- The dates for later rounds are announced by the CET Cell after Round 1 ends
- Seats that remain empty or are left by candidates come back in later rounds
- Read the brochure to know the rules for upgrading or leaving a seat in each round
- Never assume the date of the next round. Check the official notice
|
Understanding State Merit Position vs NEET PG Rank
|
- NEET PG rank: Your all-India position from the NEET PG result
- State merit position: Your position in the Maharashtra list, after the CET Cell checks domicile and category
- The state position is usually a smaller number than your all-India rank because only state-eligible candidates are in the list
- Seat allotment in Maharashtra counselling depends on your state merit position, your category and your choices
- Therefore, always use the state list when you compare yourself with last year’s state closing positions
|
How to Build Your Preference List – A Simple Method
|
| Step |
What to Do |
| Step 1 |
Write down your top 3 branches (for example Medicine, Radiology, Paediatrics) |
| Step 2 |
List the colleges you like for each branch, in your order of liking |
| Step 3 |
Check last year’s closing state ranks for these colleges from reliable sources, and place them in order |
| Step 4 |
Add a few safer branch and college options at the bottom, so that you do not lose the round |
| Step 5 |
Check fee, bond and stipend rules for each government and private college |
| Step 6 |
Re-read the full list once more before you submit and save a copy |
|
Questions to Ask Before You Choose a College
|
- How many patients and cases does the hospital handle in your branch?
- Are there enough faculty members and senior doctors in the department?
- What is the stipend, and is it paid on time?
- What are the fees, hostel charges and other charges?
- Is there a service bond? If yes, for how long and with what penalty?
- How is the research and thesis support?
- How is the city, travel and living cost?
Talk to current residents of the college if you can. Their real experience is often more useful than a brochure.
|
Understanding the In-Service Merit List
|
- An in-service merit list is made for doctors who are in government service and apply under the in-service category
- It is scheduled for 1 November 2026 along with the final state merit list
- In-service candidates must keep their service certificate and related papers ready
- The rules about in-service seats are given in the information brochure, so read that part carefully
|
College Reporting Day Checklist (6 to 10 November)
|
- CAP Round 1 selection letter (printout)
- Original documents and two sets of photocopies
- Fee payment proof and security deposit receipt
- Passport-size photographs
- Enough money for the college admission fee, as informed in the allotment letter
- Plan to reach the college early in the day, because the reporting time ends at 5:30 PM
- Keep a trusted person’s phone number handy, in case of delays
|
Common Mistakes to Avoid
|
- Ignoring the document verification status until it is too late
- Not checking the provisional list on the first day
- Missing the grievance window of 29 and 30 October
- Filling only a few choices
- Choosing colleges without checking fees or bond conditions
- Submitting choices in the last minutes
- Forgetting original documents on the joining day
- Trusting agents who promise seats for money
|
Tips to Stay Calm During Counselling
|
- Make a simple notebook with all dates, login details and receipts
- Check the official website once in the morning and once in the evening
- Talk to seniors or doctors who went through the same counselling
- Remember that you may get another chance in later rounds, so do not panic after one list
