What Does a Station Master Do? (Simple Explanation)

A Station Master is the officer in charge of a railway station. He or she looks after the safe arrival and departure of trains, works with signal and control staff, manages the station staff, and makes sure passengers and goods are handled properly. When a train is late, diverted or stopped, the Station Master is one of the people who takes quick decisions. Because the job is closely linked to train safety, the selection for this post is usually stricter than for many other railway posts, with a tough computer test, an aptitude test and a medical test. It is a graduate-level, Level-6 post, which makes it one of the more respected jobs in the Railways. Candidates from any stream can apply, so you do not need an engineering degree.

What Is an “Indicative Notice”? (Please Read First)

What the Railway Recruitment Boards have released so far is only a short or “indicative” notice. It confirms the post, the approximate number of vacancies, the application dates and some application instructions. The full details — the exact qualification, age limit, age relaxation, exam pattern, syllabus, zone-wise vacancies, medical standard and fee — are not in this short notice. They will come in the detailed CEN No. 08/2026, which will be published on the common RRB website, rrb.indianrailways.gov.in. This is why you will see different age limits and exam patterns on different websites right now. In this article, we clearly separate what is confirmed in the notice from what is only reported by other portals, so you can plan without being misled.

Important Dates 2026

Event Date (Tentative)
Indicative Notice Released 21 October 2026
Opening Date of Application 27 October 2026
Closing Date of Application 25 November 2026 (23:59 hours)
Computer Based Test (CBT) To be announced in the detailed CEN
The application link is not open yet. If the dates hold, you will get about 30 days to apply. Do not wait for the last week, because the RRB website usually becomes slow when many candidates apply together.

Vacancy and Salary

Name of the Post Pay Level / Medical Standard / Tentative Vacancies
Station Master Level 6 | Medical standard as per the detailed CEN | About 1,250
The vacancies are tentative and spread across all the RRBs. The RRB-wise and category-wise (UR, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) breakup is not given yet and will come in the detailed CEN. Pay Level 6 starts at about ₹35,400 basic pay as per the 7th Pay Commission. For central government jobs, allowances such as DA and HRA are usually paid on top of the basic pay, and railway employees also get benefits like passes and medical facilities, but the notice does not list them, so please check the detailed CEN.

Eligibility Criteria — What Is Confirmed and What Is Reported

Point Status
Educational Qualification The notice says “as per the detailed CEN”. Several portals report that a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university is needed. Please confirm in the CEN.
Age Limit The notice says “as per the detailed CEN”, counted as on 01.01.2027. Portals are reporting different ranges (see below). Do not rely on any of them yet.
Medical Standard Given in the detailed CEN. One portal reports the strict A-2 medical standard, which is commonly used for safety-related railway posts.
Application Fee Not mentioned in the indicative notice. See the detailed CEN.

Age Limit — Why You See Different Numbers Online

Reported Age Range Comment
20 to 30 years Reported by several education portals
21 to 30 years Reported by one job portal, as on 01.01.2027
20 to 33 years Reported by one study portal, with rules and relaxations to apply
What to do: The indicative notice itself does not give the age limit. Wait for the detailed CEN. Also remember that the age is counted as on 1 January 2027, so a candidate who is a few months over the limit today may still be eligible, and the reverse can also happen. Relaxation for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen will be as per the CEN.

Selection Process — Two Versions You May See

Version 1 — As listed in the indicative notice summary: Computer Based Test (CBT 1) → Computer Based Test (CBT 2) → Document Verification → Medical Examination. The notice describes this only as the “general” process and says the detailed procedure will be in the CEN.

Version 2 — As reported by several portals about the new, separate Station Master recruitment: A single-stage CBT followed by a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), then Document Verification and Medical Examination. In this version, candidates are shortlisted for CBAT in a ratio of about 8 times the vacancies (RRB-wise) based on their CBT merit, and the final merit is made from 70% CBT marks and 30% CBAT marks.

Which one is right? The detailed CEN will decide. Because Station Master is being advertised through its own separate CEN, many portals expect the CBT-plus-CBAT pattern, but this is not yet confirmed in the short notice.

What Is CBAT? (Simple Explanation)

CBAT stands for Computer Based Aptitude Test. It is not a normal general-knowledge or maths test. It checks the mental skills and personality traits that are needed for a job where safety and quick decisions matter — things like attention, memory, speed of reaction, and the ability to stay calm. You do not need any special subject knowledge. But you must understand the test format and practise, because many strong candidates lose marks only because the format is new to them. If CBAT is part of this recruitment, passing the CBT alone will not be enough — the CBAT marks may carry real weight (reported as 30%) in the final merit list.

Exam Pattern and Syllabus (Reported — Please Confirm)

The indicative notice does not give the exam pattern or syllabus. One portal reports that the separate Station Master CBT may have 100 marks to be finished in 120 minutes. In earlier RRB graduate-level exams, the question papers covered Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Awareness, and wrong answers carried a negative mark of one-third. Treat these as a guide only, until the detailed CEN is published. The best way to start now is with the common topics that are used in almost every railway graduate-level exam:
  • Mathematics: number system, percentage, ratio, time and work, speed and distance, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, data interpretation
  • Reasoning: coding-decoding, series, analogy, syllogism, blood relations, puzzles, direction sense
  • General Awareness: current affairs, Indian history and polity basics, geography, general science, Indian Railways knowledge

How to Apply for RRB Station Master 2026 (From 27 October)

  • Open the official application portal — www.rrbapply.gov.in
  • Complete the registration as asked for this recruitment
  • Read the detailed CEN No. 08/2026 on rrb.indianrailways.gov.in before filling the form
  • Fill in your personal, educational and category details carefully
  • Upload your photograph, signature and the documents asked
  • Submit the application before 25 November 2026, 11:59 PM
  • Save or print the final application for your record

Important Aadhaar Instructions (From the Notice)

  • Verify your primary details using Aadhaar while filling the online application. Candidates who are not Aadhaar-verified may face detailed scrutiny and delays at every stage of the recruitment
  • For successful Aadhaar verification, your name and date of birth in Aadhaar must match 100% with your full name and date of birth in your 10th class pass certificate
  • Update your Aadhaar with your latest photograph and latest biometrics (fingerprints and iris) before you fill the form
  • Keep your educational certificates and category certificates ready before you apply

Tip: If your Aadhaar needs a correction, start it today. Aadhaar updates can take days or weeks, and this is the one step that can delay your application if it is left for the last week.

Documents to Keep Ready

  • Aadhaar card with updated name, date of birth, photo and biometrics
  • 10th pass certificate (for name and date of birth)
  • Graduation degree certificate and mark sheets
  • Category certificate (SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS), if applicable, in the correct format
  • PwBD or Ex-Servicemen certificate, if applicable
  • Scanned recent photograph and signature in the size given in the CEN
  • Active mobile number and email ID, since all updates will be sent there

Simple 4-Week Starter Plan While You Wait for the CEN

  • Week 1: Fix your documents first — check Aadhaar details, scan certificates, and make sure your name and date of birth match your 10th certificate. Then revise basic arithmetic and number system
  • Week 2: Practise percentage, ratio, time and work, speed and distance every day. Add reasoning series, coding-decoding and puzzles, 30 minutes a day
  • Week 3: Start General Awareness: read current affairs for the last six months and basic static topics, with some focus on Indian Railways. Take one timed practice set every two days
  • Week 4: When the detailed CEN is out, adjust your plan to the real pattern and syllabus. Start full-length computer-based mock tests and keep a note of your mistakes. Learn what the CBAT looks like and try sample aptitude tests

Always follow the official syllabus once it is published. This plan is only to help you use the waiting time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Believing the age limit or exam pattern from one website. Different sites show different numbers until the CEN is out
  • Ignoring the Aadhaar and 10th certificate name match. A small spelling difference can cause trouble later
  • Applying on the last day when the website is slow
  • Skipping the aptitude test practice because “it needs no study”. It does need practice
  • Ignoring the medical standard. Check the standard in the CEN, including eyesight requirements, before you apply
  • Falling for touts and fake job offers. Railway selection is only through the official process, and no one can guarantee you a job for money
